The Light of the World

For all who know me you already know this is my favorite time of the year! There is not a single season I anticipate more than Advent and Christmastime. From the initial decorations, which are started the day after Thanksgiving, through Christmas Day itself I intentionally attempt to keep the “Light of the World” in the forefront of my mind and heart. The world today is darker than before. Never before has the darkness been so seemingly overwhelming. Terror threats, attacks, and attempts are at an all time high, thus we need to remember that darkness can never overcome Light....

Thanksgiving Is A Decision

The day we call Thanksgiving comes this week.  Since 1941 the fourth Thursday in November has been recognized as “Thanksgiving Day” in the United States.  We attempt to trace the roots of the thanksgiving holiday tradition to the 1621 celebration at Plymouth (now Massachusetts) with the Pilgrims and Puritans and Native Americans.  Truth is that very little of what we do today would have been even recognizable to those early America settlers. For most of us Thanksgiving is summed up as food, family, and football (and not always in that order).  As we embrace this week, I want to remind...

From the Mountain to the Valley

Following a week of summit experiences it is imperative to realize we are headed into some valleys. As I’ve said before, Life is more about learning to negotiate the mountain ranges than it is about climbing the mountain. In Matthew 17, we read the story about Jesus leading Peter, James, and John up a high mountain where He would be transfigured before them. This can best be desired showing them outwardly what he was inwardly. The absolute divinity of Jesus shown through his humanity. While on this summit both Moses and Elijah appeared and talked with Jesus. This mountain top experience...

There’s Always Another Mountain

This past weekend our family made a day trip to the North Carolina Mountains which included picking apples in a beautiful orchard.  While driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway our youngest grandson asked, “Can we stop so we can look at the lovely leaves?”  This five-year old was certainly observant because the views were incredibly beautiful.  The mountains were ablaze with color.  As we continued the drive to the summit each stop seemed to reveal more than the last in terms of spectacular views of God’s handiwork.  At one point, our eight-year old exclaimed “It’s really easy to talk to...

Keep Pushing The Peddles

Recently we bought our grandson a new bicycle.  This was a monumental moment for him as it would be his first opportunity to ride a bike without the aid of training wheels.  I have to admit I had forgotten how hard it was to teach a kid to ride a bike!  I mean, after-all, “It’s like riding a bike!” The problem is, first we have to learn to ride the bike! I watched this little fellow stare at the bike and eventually mount the beast while continually pleading for me to assure him that I was holding on to the...

This One Is In The Books

[Monday, 05 October 2015 –CHARLOTTE, NC 2015GMT] — I realize, by the comments of some, that we mistakenly stated “October, rather than September,” in the blogs which required some trouble, by time you read this blog our team was in route to our Accra for our departure ritual. This means that we made the 5-hour journey over rough roads that lead to better roads, which turn back into damaged roads, which eventually lead to solid paved roads and highways into the Capital city. Once there, we checked in to a very nice airport hotel where we were welcomed to a...
