Above All Else…

In the famed story, Aesop gives us the lesson learned from the Tortoise and the Hare, when the Tortoise said: “Slow but steady progress wins the race.” There is something certainly relevant about this truth. The christian life is a marathon not a sprint. There will always be both mountain peaks and deep valleys all along the way. It is not too difficult to show grace, gratitude, and generosity when we are on the pinnacles of life, but when we find ourselves in the chasms these may not be so simple to display. We must always remember that it is...

Snatching Defeat From The Jaws of Victory

Lessons learned from Super Bowl XLIX In a game that seemed almost scripted for the theatre that is the NFL, everyone got all they had hoped for. Super Bowl XLIX was a back and forth gridiron battle right down to the wire. The advertisers were elated because no one was turning off the TV – even to the very end. It was a magical night for football followers. The final dramatic act would have everyone talking and proclaiming the Seattle Seahawks back-to-back Super Bowl champs. Following an improbable reception that amazed everyone involved, the reigning champions had the ball 2nd-and-goal...

‘American Sniper’ Shines A Bright Light

This weekend my wife and I went to the movies and watched “American Sniper.” We like much of America viewed the film through civilian eyes whose only contact with the war on terror has come through our television screens, radio programs, and print media. We have lived our lives in relative ignorance of the dangers of the war and threats. I know there are people who have suffered personally during these years of battle and too many have seen sons and daughters, husbands and mothers, brothers and sisters wounded, injured, and killed in the war for freedom. I thank each...

Another Lesson From The NFL Playoffs

It matters more how you finish that how you start! For nearly everyone watching the Seattle Seahawks host the Green Bay Packers football game on Sunday it was obvious that Green Bay was going to win the game. With a little more than two minutes left in the game they led the Seahawks 19-7. They were going to the Super Bowl. But as the post game conversation would tell, “We did not finish” was all that could be said in light of their OT lost. For the Seahawks it was the “thrill of victory” but for Green Bay is was...

What can we learn from the NFL Playoffs?

This past weekend I enjoyed watching the NFL playoffs on TV. Not every team I pulled for was victorious in their efforts on the field but a life lesson was reinforced. “The best team does not always win, but the best prepared team rarely looses.” I watched four games this past weekend and without a doubt the better coached teams …the best prepared teams ALL won their contests. It reminded me that life, like football, is not an individual sport. Just because a person is “the best” at something does not guarantee victory. That person, be it a quarterback, a...

Happy New Year!

Here we are again. Another year has past and a new day has dawned. 2014 holds nothing but memories and 2015 holds nothing put potential. I hope you have finished with your reflections on the past and are enjoying the prospects of what this year holds in store. The Word of God is replete with the theme of moving forward. Paul wrote, “Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead … press on toward the goal …” (Phil 3:13-14) It is our privilege and responsibility to dream about the future rather than dwell on the past. You...
