“There’s Something Evil in our Society …”
Yesterday’s terrible tragedy at the Washington Navy Yard reminds us of the absolute horrors of the human condition. During her Press Conference, Dr. Janis Orlowski, Chief Medical Officer at Washington, D.C.’s MedStar Washington Hospital Center said, “there’s something evil in our society that we as Americans have to work to try and eradicate.”
After listening to her complete statement it seems the Doctor was using this platform to share her beliefs about gun control. She thinks that so much of the terror would come to an end if we just eliminated guns. While she certainly has the right to voice her idea of a solution, I think the greater issue here is the real evil that is in our society.
Her insightful sentence should resonate with every Christian. “There’s something evil in our society…” Yes, the evil in our society is Sin. Many will look for logical and sociological explanations of what happened yesterday, but you and I know the TRUTH.
As Believers, we know that the heart of man is desperately wicked — corrupted by the nature of Sin. (see Jeremiah 17:9)
As a society we have abandoned this truth. In our progressive slide toward humanism and secularism we have allowed ourselves to turn to all the wrong places for solutions. Humanity does not possess the ability to “eradicate” the evil.
There is good news! Jesus said, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Jesus has already paid the sin debt and defeated sin for all who will believe. Listen to these reminders from scripture:
Romans 3:22-23 (ESV)
22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Romans 6:23 (ESV)
23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 5:6-8 (ESV)
6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— 8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 10:9-10 (ESV)
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
1 John 1:8-9 (ESV)
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Sin IS the evil of our society. Only Jesus can eradicate the sin problem. If you have never received Jesus Christ, call on Him today. Evil can only be removed through personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
