The First Week
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, [and] a light on my path”
As we begin this New Year, it is important to know where we are going. Perhaps you have spent time setting goals for this new year and if so you probably have a path to meet those goals. It is always easier to stay on the intended path when there is light on the path.
A few years ago while in West Africa I remember one evening so vividly. Two of us were making our way back to our hotel from our final speaking assignment for the day. The night sky was so dark and the roads were so bad that we were moving along in the vehicle at a snail’s pace. We came to a fork in the road and our driver told us that he wanted us to get out of the truck and walk straight up the road in front of us because he had to drop some of our local pastors in a nearby village. He said “the path to the village is very difficult and dangerous for travel. I want you to walk along and I will meet you at the crossroad ahead.”
Thankful for his concern for us, we got out of the truck and began to walk along the road. With the tail lights from the vehicle now gone we suddenly realized just how dark it was. Armed with only a flashlight we walked along. I remember shining the light down at my feet to be sure of the next step and then shining it up the road to make sure our direction was steady. That encounter forever cemented this verse of scripture into my heart!
The word of God will give you clarity for each step you take but it will also keep your path illuminated.
Jesus is the Light of the World and His word is all that you need to keep moving in the right direction. (By the way, the driver did meet us at the crossroad!)
