Looking Back to look Forward

This past weekend Mary and I had the opportunity to visit our High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. The reason for the visit was that the school was celebrating 50 years of existence. Wake Christian Academy (WCA), founded in 1966, has grown from one small house to a sprawling 58-acre campus today with nearly 900 students. It was an absolute joy to revisit the school and be reminded of the great impact it has had upon so many people. As we met old friends, viewed old photos, and thought about what had been, it was encouraging to consider all that...

Countdown to Ghana

Countdown to Ghana: What Kind of Attitude do you have Today? If you are using my book, You gotta START somewhere, as a part of your daily devotionals then you realize the timeliness of this week’s verse. Week Eight reminds us that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil 4:13) As our team is in preparation for our next international ministry mission to West Africa so many people, both at home and abroad, are seemingly responding to questions and requests with the same flawed answer of “I can’t” do this or that. It has been my...

Gearing Up For Ghana

In 23 days our team of 5 will board airplanes and set out for Ghana, West Africa for our first international ministry project of 2017. It’s hard to believe that this will be our 34th trip to this country! Joining me on this project will be Jeff Andler, Mark Chase, David Ney, and Andy Poe, all ministry veterans with many years of experience. I am humbled and honored to have these great partners in the Gospel participating in this work. I spoke this morning with our coordinating council in Ghana and they assured me that all the months of preparation...

“One-A-Week Challenge” – The Last Week, 52

“Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!” –Psalm 150:6 nasb The book of Psalms begins and ends in blessing. In the beginning we see how God blesses man and in the end we see man blessing God. This final stanza of the Psalms beckons like a conductor before his orchestra and choir with one final admonition. “Praise the Lord!” The Author of all creation has given us, through His infallible Word, our instruction and invitation to show Him absolute honor and glory through our praise. The Psalmist is saying that our breath should praise God because...

“One-A-Week Challenge” – Week 51

“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” --1 Peter 5:7 niv Most parents have a similar story. We travel with our children to a park or zoo or an amusement park looking for a fun-filled day of activities only to discover that eventually the little legs of the youngster seem to no longer be able to carry their own weight. After several whines or complaints, the adult does the natural thing of hoisting the child onto their back or shoulders to carry them for the next leg of the journey. I remember a very specific day...

“One-A-Week Challenge” – Week 50

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” –Proverbs 27:17 nasb I grew up in an era where every boy and man carried a pocketknife. If I had my pants on, I had a knife. I took it to school during the week and to church on the weekend. I always had my pocketknife. Those days have been replaced by an era where those little knives are seen as weapons of mass destruction! I have had more fun watching the TSA officers in airports discover one of these little knives in people’s luggage as they tried to make it...
